Picayune Main Street, Inc. invites you to join us, a group of volunteers, who participate in and work to advance a new vision for our community. This vision encompasses renewed and thriving retail and service businesses, professional and government offices, and restaurants. Our vision includes downtown revitalization, a new walking track for citizens, new lighting for our downtown area, and comfortable benches for sitting. A downtown area people feel comfortable to live, work, shop and play.
You can help make this happen. Supporters and volunteers-people just like you. Main Street Members are people who may or may not live or work in Picayune’s downtown area, but they are people who envision a place that is attractive, thriving and lively, active seven days a week. A town you can be proud to show off to visiting family and friends.
Your membership in Picayune Main Street, Inc. will provide support for the operational work of the organization. This support helps provide Main Street with a staff and the cost of office expenses, sponsor events, and promotions. Membership fees also support the activities of our volunteer committees: Promotion, Design, Economic Restructuring and Special Events. Membership support is a critical piece of the public-private partnership “pie” that is making it possible to achieve Picayune Main Street goals.
Main Street goals are high. We plan to move quickly to make our community look and work better. We want those who walk around our town to feel safe and comfortable. We want to make sure our small retail and large companies thrive and expand. Main Street wants to attract new shops, services, housing, and entertainment opportunities.

Projects: Upcoming 2009
Façade Grant Program- $1000.00 Façade Grants will be awarded to business members in the downtown who are approved by the Economic Restructuring Committee and Board of Directors- 2 grants will be awarded each year.
Train Depot Museum – Picayune Main Street, inc. will work with a group of volunteers to open a railroad museum inside the Intramodal Transportation Center. Volunteers will be needed for tours of the museum.
Historical Plaques will be placed on historical properties in the downtown area- Picayune Main Street’s Historical Committee will gather information on selected properties and place the informative plaques for all to enjoy.
Awards Banquet- Picayune Main Street Board of Directors and committee are working to plan an awards banquet to recognize individual members or businesses for their accomplishments throughout the year.
Research Picayune becoming a CLG-Certified Local Government- historical properties can be registered
on the State and National Historic Registry, which will allow properties to qualify for historic, tax credits.
Picayune Main Street, Inc. is a proud member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Jacobean (1600-1690)
An English style of furniture, which is medieval in appearance with straight lines, rigid designs, sturdy construction, ornate carvings and a dark finish. Much of the early American furniture was patterned after this style.
Early American (1640-1700)
Rudimentary utilitarian furniture made from local woods. It was brought from or modeled after European furniture styles, particularly from England, France, the Netherlands, Scandinavia and Spain.
William and Mary (1690-1725)
Named after William and Mary of England (1689-1694). It has Dutch and Chinese influences and is characterized by trumpet turned legs terminating in a ball or Spanish foot, padded or caned chair seats, and Oriental lacquer-work.
Queen Anne (1700-1755)
Named after Queen Anne of England who reigned from 1702-1714. The Queen Anne style is a refinement of the William and Mary style with a moderately proportioned, graceful appearance. It is characterized by cabriole legs terminating in a pad or drake foot, fiddle-back chair back, and bat wing shaped drawer pulls.

Pennsylvania Dutch (1720-1830)

Named after English designer and cabinetmaker George Hepplewhite whose designs in "The Cabinet Maker and Upholsterers Guide" were published posthumously in 1788. The Hepplewhite style is neoclassic and was reproduced in the United States particularly in the Carolinas, Maryland, New England, New York and Virginia. It is characterized by a delicate appearance, tapered legs and the use of contrasting veneers and inlay.

1920s China Cabinet and Beautiful Hall Tree
Whew! I've been working hard at the shop today organizing and making room for more furniture. Today I brought in two pieces that were so hard to part with. I bought them for the shop, but let them live in my house for a couple of weeks so that I could enjoy them before their new owners take them home. The Cherry hall tree was told to me by the seller that it's a reproduction, but Mr. Benton (of Benton Brothers Antiques) who KNOWS antique furniture says he believes its the real deal because it is handmade, not machine made. He says I'm giving it away at $250. Better hurry and buy it before I change my mind! :o)

Magical Sticks and Tigers
What a fun idea. I came across Ms. Susan Sanford's blog on one of my internet "diggings" for some information or other. She had posted three beautifully decorated twigs and said to leave your information and she'd mail it to you for you to place for someone to find...simply to make their day. I loved the idea and she sent mine right out. I held onto it until finding the perfect spot in the mouth of the tiger statue front of Mike the Tiger's habitat.
